Everyone was crying and feeling sad because the girl was dead. But Jesus said, “Don’t cry. She is not dead. She is only sleeping.” And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead (Luke 8:52-53). Jesus stated that the dead are not truly dead, but merely asleep. Do I believe Him? Yes, I do! I have faith in Jesus, despite what others may think. Do I doubt His words? No, I do not! However, do all Christians believe in what Jesus said about the dead being asleep? No! Why? Because some lack faith in Jesus. They do not believe in Him wholeheartedly. They have not witnessed the dead arise from their sleep, so they question His words. Their faith in Jesus differs significantly from the unwavering faith of Abraham and Daniel. Abraham did not question Yahweh, and Daniel did not doubt God. Both believed in God without any doubt in their hearts. In contrast, many Christians view their faith as a means to an end. They filter their beliefs based on personal desires and benefits rather than simply accepting what Jesus has said. When Jesus declared that the dead are not dead, they responded that it was merely a metaphor. Is it a metaphor when the prophet Moses holds out his staff and the Red Sea parts? When the Israelites walk on dry ground while escaping the Egyptian army, is that a metaphor? No, that exemplifies faith the size of a mustard seed! In Matthew 17:19, Jesus' disciples asked Him why they could not drive the demons out from the boy, and Jesus replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you" (Matthew 17:20). This illustrates that without strong faith, even His disciples can achieve nothing! We are more privileged than His disciples because we are His children—faithful children obedient to Him without reservation. This means that we can make the blind see, cast out demons, and raise the dead from sleep. Just because we may not possess the faith the size of a mustard seed does not negate the truth of His words—that the dead are not dead, but asleep. Jesus said, "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8). There is no condition attached to His promise other than faith the size of a mustard seed. NOTHING will be impossible for us if we have that faith. It has nothing to do with context or metaphor; it pertains to strong faith! Even faith as small as a mustard seed can achieve great things. So, do we now believe Him when He said that the dead are not dead, but asleep? Or do we still doubt His words? I suspect that many Christians still struggle to believe what Jesus said. When they encounter something in Scripture that they disagree with or find challenging, they often resort to the "context" argument as an excuse. God's message is universal! His teachings apply to everyone—Gentiles and non-Gentiles alike, both then and now. For instance, when He says do not commit adultery, that commandment applies universally—to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or status. What relevance does "context" have when discussing adultery? Under what circumstances is adultery acceptable? The answer is none! There is no context in which violating the Ten Commandments is permissible. They are intended to guide our behavior and have everything to do with our spiritual path and our commitment to uphold Christian beliefs.
